Efficient dam management prevents catastrophic flooding along Neretva River

Catastrophic consequences in the Neretva river basin have been avoided through timely planning and management of hydroelectric power plants by Elektroprivreda BiH. Intense precipitation and rapid snowmelt accompanied by rain caused the level of the Jablanica reservoir to rise by more than 10 meters within 48 hours. However, the dams successfully prevented significantly larger water flows toward Mostar, Pocitelj, Capljina, and Metkovic, which would have inevitably triggered floods and major damage.

"Catastrophic consequences were avoided through timely planning of the management of the HPPs on the Neretva by Elektroprivreda BiH, and the efficient preparation and maintenance of free space in the Jablanica reservoir to receive a large inflow of water," stated Elektroprivreda BiH in a press release.

Since the onset of heavy snowfall on Sunday, January 4, followed by rapid melting and rain, water inflows into the Jablanica reservoir were on average 10 times, and at certain points 15 times, higher than those planned and recorded in December of last year. All inflow quantities were absorbed into Jablanica Lake. Through a gradual and controlled release of water at a rate of 160 m³/s, the system prevented sudden pressure on the Neretva riverbed and the flooding of inhabited areas.

The current situation confirms that the responsible and professional management of the Jablanica, Grabovica, and Salakovac hydroelectric plants remains a decisive factor for the safety of the entire river basin. Officials added that lowering the reservoir level of HPP Jablanica prior to a water wave is one of the best operational practices for active flood protection.

In times of increased hydrological risk, these hydropower facilities play a key role in containing flood waves and torrential flows, protecting human lives, the environment, and preventing significant material damage.
