EU lawmaker Helmut Brandstätter backs N1 editors’ management buyout plan

Brandstätter, himself a former journalist and editor, emphasized that the European Union must provide strong backing for independent journalism.

“N1’s move toward a management buyout is a powerful signal. When editors themselves act to protect the newsroom, it shows how real the pressure on independent journalism has become."

He noted that, as a former journalist, he knows that media freedom is never guaranteed. It must be protected every single day.

“N1’s editors are doing exactly that, and they deserve clear European support for it,” Brandstätter concluded.
