The City of Konjic has received essential emergency response equipment aimed at enhancing its disaster preparedness and response capabilities, as part of the European Union’s ongoing support for flood-affected communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The newly delivered equipment—comprising 100 water tanks, 50 electricity generators, and 25 high-pressure washers—was provided through the EU-funded and UNDP-implemented “Municipal Governmental Governance” (EU4MEG) project. The initiative ensures that critical resources reach municipalities most vulnerable to natural disasters. This marks the second batch of equipment, following an initial delivery to Donja Jablanica in October 2024.
The initiative is part of the EU’s broader commitment to aiding Bosnia and Herzegovina in its recovery from the devastating floods and landslides of October 2024. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the EU swiftly provided emergency assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Additionally, €20 million has been allocated to help affected communities rebuild, with a focus on housing, community infrastructure, and private sector development.
A formal handover ceremony was held in Konjic, bringing together representatives from the EU, UNDP, and local authorities, as well as direct beneficiaries who will utilize the new equipment to enhance emergency response efforts.
Mojca Krisper Figueroa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to disaster preparedness and long-term recovery: “The EU has been a reliable partner to municipalities affected by the floods and landslides of October 2024, and we will continue to provide support to aid recovery efforts while strengthening resilience and preparedness for the future. I am pleased that the equipment delivered to Donja Jablanica and Konjic will contribute to ongoing flood recovery initiatives.”
UNDP Resident Representative in BiH, Renaud Meyer, highlighted the importance of reinforcing local disaster preparedness: “With the support of the European Union, we are strengthening the capacities of communities on the frontlines of climate-related risks. The equipment delivered to Konjic will help first responders act swiftly and effectively, contributing to long-term resilience and disaster risk reduction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
Konjic Mayor Osman Ćatic welcomed the support, emphasizing the significance of the equipment for the city’s emergency response teams: “These are immediate measures, but they will be followed by long-term strategies to prevent future disasters.”
One of the direct beneficiaries, Sead Zalihic from Buturovic Polje, who has witnessed the severe impact of past floods, shared his perspective on the new equipment’s importance: “Any assistance to the City of Konjic at this moment is welcome. The road to recovery may be long and difficult, but life must go on.”
The European Union continues to support municipalities across Bosnia and Herzegovina by providing essential infrastructure and resources to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. This latest delivery to Konjic represents another step toward building stronger and more resilient communities in the face of environmental challenges.
