The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) said that, during its patrols in north Kosovo, it “witnesses a disturbing presence of armed men, often by masked individuals and groups,” and described the security situation in north Kosovo as disturbing and tense.

“During our patrols in the field, we witness a disturbing presence of armed men, often by masked individuals and groups, in the north of Kosovo. This is unacceptable. We are witnessing the installation of additional barricades, which must be removed immediately. They are illegal and hinder freedom of movement. In addition to these concerns, criminality in the north of Kosovo is also worrying. The security vacuum created after the resignation of the Kosovo Serb policemen can be exploited by criminal groups. It is up to the law enforcement agencies to prevent this,” EULEX told the Pristina media.

In coordination with KFOR, EULEX’s formed police unit and reserve police unit continue their field patrols in north Kosovo.

“What is now important is to immediately de-escalate the situation, restore calm and refrain from more provocative actions,” said EULEX, adding that this should be done primarily for the benefit of the local population, whose protection and safety are threatened due to the current situation.

The head of EULEX, Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, said that this mission positively responded to a request by the Kosovo Police for the officers at the Jarinje administrative border crossing to be supplied with food and clothing.

“Pleased to announce that following a request by the Kosovo Police, EULEX on 17 December delivered essential supplies to the Kosovo Police officers at the Jarinje Common Crossing Point, including food supplies, clothing as well as hygiene items,” Wigemark wrote on Twitter.
