The Head of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luigi Soreca, met on Monday with Belmin Karamehmedovic, General Director of BHRT, to address the public broadcaster’s severe financial crisis, which now threatens its very existence.
In a statement following the meeting, Soreca warned that the situation at BHRT has reached a critical juncture and emphasised the urgent need for action.
"A strong, independent public broadcasting system is essential for high-quality and objective programming and plays a vital role in supporting democracy, public trust, and social cohesion," Soreca stated. "Ensuring the financial sustainability of public broadcasting is also a key priority for Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path to EU membership."
He also underlined the importance of adopting a new and comprehensive Public Broadcasting System (PBS) Law, calling it a long-overdue measure. While long-term structural reforms are needed, Soreca noted that short-term solutions to alleviate BHRT’s immediate financial needs do exist, provided there is sufficient political will.
"The EU stands ready to facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders to identify sustainable, long-term solutions," he said, reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina’s public broadcasting sector.
