First group of Bosnian citizens set to depart Dubai amid complex Gulf crisis

Flight operations have resumed at Dubai airport, with the first group of Bosnian (BiH) citizens scheduled to depart for their home country on Wednesday. BiH Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmedin Konakovic, confirmed the development to Fena, while cautioning that the situation across the Gulf region remains "unpredictable and complex."

"A group of our citizens is expected to fly toward their home tomorrow. Although they have scheduled flights, conditions on the ground remain volatile, and we cannot claim anything with absolute certainty," Konakovic stated. He noted that the evacuation process is currently following the dynamics announced by Emirati authorities.
Regular lines and potential charters
The planned flight from Dubai is a scheduled commercial service. Konakovic emphasized that if citizens who have been waiting for five to ten days manage to return via regular lines, mass state-led evacuations will not be initiated.
However, the Minister has already held discussions with the Chair of the Council of Ministers, Borjana Kristo, regarding alternative measures. "I am waiting to consult with the Minister of Finance to analyze the possibility of engaging a charter flight if necessary. We believe this could be funded through the Council of Ministers' reserve funds," he explained.
Regional cooperation and land routes
As a contingency plan, the Ministry has secured an agreement with Saudi Arabia to issue visas at land borders should airspace be closed. Furthermore, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric has offered assistance, suggesting that BiH citizens could join evacuation flights organized by Serbia. Currently, three BiH nationals are completing paperwork to utilize this option.
Regional breakdown of citizens
The Ministry is tracking several groups across the region:
- United Arab Emirates: Approximately 1,000 citizens in communication with the embassy.
- Qatar: Around 300 citizens.
- Kuwait: Approximately 100 citizens.
- Bahrain and Oman: Various smaller groups.
Concerns over Tehran
While the situation in the Emirates shows signs of movement, Konakovic described the status in Tehran as "extremely worrying." He noted a complete lack of de-escalation or diplomatic dialogue. Most BiH citizens, including the families of diplomatic staff, have already left Iran, though a few individuals, including two athletes, have chosen to remain for the time being.
Priority for departures in the Emirates is currently being given to transit passengers who were stranded at the airport, rather than those on business or tourist visits.
