Forto: Demining of Sava's right bank opens way for Port of Brcko development

Work has begun on demining the right bank of the Sava River, marking an important step towards eliminating the mine threat from an area that has remained unsafe for residents for more than three decades.

The work began after Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Communications and Transport Edin Forto signed contracts with the selected contractors in Brčko in late September.
The project covers 73 locations spanning a total area of more than five million square meters along the right bank of the Sava River.
"The most important thing is that people living along the Sava will no longer have to fear mines and that land which has been inaccessible for decades can finally be used again. At the same time, we are opening up opportunities for the development of our strategic Port of Brcko, safer navigation and new investment," Minister Forto said.
Demining is one of the key prerequisites for improving the Sava River waterway and making better use of the river's economic potential.
The demining project is part of the broader Sava and Drina Corridors Integrated Development Programme and is financed through a €16.5 million grant from the European Union, secured through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), with additional support from a World Bank loan, the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH said in a statement.
