Russia's Gazprom has moved to fully halt gas supply to Bulgaria's Bulgargaz and Poland's PGNiG due to their failure to conduct payments in rubles, as prescribed by the Russian President's decree from March 31, 2022, the company said on Wednesday. Gazprom said it has notified the companies of the suspension of gas supplies as of April 27 until the payments are made according to the procedure outlined in the President's decree.

“Bulgaria and Poland are transit states. In case of unauthorized offtake of Russian gas from the volumes intended for transit into third countries, the transited supplies will be reduced by the volume that was offtaken,” said Gazprom.

Almir Becarevic, energy expert talked to N1 earlier, explaining what such situation means for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is supplied with gas through the Turkish Stream via Bulgaria and Serbia.

There are two scenarios, according to Becarevic, the first one meaning that Russia will cut off supply for Bulgaria but the country will allow the gas flow to other countries, which would mean a certain source of income for Russia.

But, Becarevic added, such outcome is not too logical to expect.

Another option, he added, is for Bulgaria to ban the flow of gas through its territory to other countries, which would ultimately mean that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be left without this energy source.
