An unidentified person, whose identity is being determined, wounded a member of the Gendarmerie on duty at the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade today.
“Today, around 11 a.m., an unknown individual fired a crossbow at a Gendarmerie officer on duty at the Israeli Embassy, hitting him in the neck,” said Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic.
The Gendarmerie officer, M.J. (born 1990), defended himself with his weapon, subduing the attacker, who later died from his injuries.
The officer, conscious, was transported to the Emergency Center where surgery will be performed to remove the arrow from his neck.
Dacic suggested that the attack might have been carried out by extremists, whom he described as “converts from our faith to Islam.”
Officials and diplomats of the Israeli Embassy were not in the building at the time of the incident.
“The police are investigating the case. We have no further details. At the time of the incident, the Embassy was closed, and its officials and diplomats were not in the building. We wish the wounded member of the Gendarmerie a speedy recovery,” the embassy stated for N1.
