The "Days of Resistance in Bosnia-Podrinje Canton (BPK)" event began on Saturday with the laying of flowers on memorials and honouring the fallen defenders and murdered children in Gorazde.
The delegations of the executive and legislative authorities of the BPK and the City of Gorazde, the Coordination of Veterans’ Associations and the Association of Women Members of the RBiH Army laid flowers on the central memorial “Goražde, the hero city, to its defenders” and on the memorial to the murdered children of Gorazde 1992-1995.
Memories were evoked of events from 32 years ago, when a general attack on Gorazde, the only remaining free town on the Drina River, began early in the morning. The first shells fell on the municipality building, and the town immediately lost telecommunications, electricity, and water. The circle around Gorazde was closed, and tens of thousands of refugees and displaced residents of the surrounding towns – Visegrad, Foca, Cajnice, Rogatica and Rudo – found refuge in it.
The 1,336-day siege ended with the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
In the history of warfare, Gorazde received the epithet the “hero city”, while on the other hand, no one has been held accountable for the rampant destruction and mass suffering and killing of innocent civilians in the city, 32 years after the war. During the siege of Gorazde, over 4,000 people died, including at least 148 children.
The citizens of Gorazde and the BPK will be reminded of these facts during the multi-day event, which will continue on Sunday with the laying of flowers on the graves of Halid Huber and comrades who died on May 5, 1992.
