Green Transition: Solar energy replaces generators in Una National Park

Una National Park, one of four Bosnia's national parks, located in the northwest - border with Croatia, is set to introduce solar energy in its most visited visitor zone, Strbacki buk – Lohovo, marking a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure and environmental protection in this part of the country.

The project envisages the installation of solar panels as a replacement for the existing diesel-powered electricity system, which will eliminate the use of generators and reduce harmful environmental and health impacts.
Strbacki buk – Lohovo is one of the park’s most frequented locations, known for its exceptional natural beauty and well-developed tourist facilities. As part of ongoing infrastructure improvements, a new parking area with 171 spaces has already been constructed, along with mobile toilets, tourist amenities and sales stands.
Until now, electricity in this area has relied on diesel generators, which, according to estimates, consumed around 7,300 liters of fuel annually. This resulted in nearly 20 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, along with other harmful gases and high noise levels that negatively affected both visitors and the surrounding natural environment.
The new project includes the installation of solar panels on three mobile toilets, providing sufficient energy capacity to power the entire area of approximately 4,400 square meters. The system will consist of photovoltaic cells, inverters and lithium batteries, strategically positioned to maximize solar exposure.
The transition to solar energy is expected to bring multiple benefits, including the complete elimination of harmful emissions and noise, reduced operating costs and a more reliable and continuous electricity supply.
“This project represents an important step towards modernizing energy infrastructure and improving the tourist offer, while preserving natural resources and applying the principles of sustainable development,” said Alen Zulic, acting director of Una National Park. He emphasized that replacing diesel generators will significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality.
The project is planned to be implemented over an eight-month period. Its ultimate goal is to establish a permanent, environmentally friendly and financially sustainable energy system. Once completed, the solar installation will be owned and managed by the Una National Park Public Enterprise.
The initiative is expected to directly benefit visitors, tourism workers and local businesses, while the broader community will gain from reduced pollution and a strengthened reputation of the park as a sustainable tourist destination.
