Nestled on the slopes of Mount Vlasic near Travnik, the village of Guca Gora is known for its Franciscan monastery and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi.
Guca Gora has been named one of the 17 most beautiful villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and since this initiative became part of the global “Most Beautiful Villages in the World” brand, Guca Gora has rightfully earned its place on the world tourism map.
When you visit Guca Gora, the monastery is undoubtedly the most striking structure. The original monastery is mentioned in written records as early as 1425. Over the centuries, this place has witnessed a turbulent history, but today’s church and monastery date back to 1856, with renovations by architect Josip Vancas in 1894. The monastery and church were burned down in 1945, only to be rebuilt a decade later.
Today, the monastery houses a valuable and extensive ethnographic collection, as well as a library with several thousand books. Unfortunately, due to ongoing renovations, access to the museum exhibits is currently not possible, but the reopening is expected soon, making the collection available for visitors once again. Interestingly, the monastery was frequently visited by Nobel laureate Ivo Andric.
The village of Guca Gora is located on the slopes of Mount Vlasic, which was declared a nature park by the Travnik municipal council in 2007. Nearby is the well-known pine forest “Carine,” a popular local picnic spot.
During your visit to this village, you can also explore lesser-known sites like medieval tombs or try homemade cornmeal dishes prepared with locally milled flour.
