Hate speech and glorification of war criminals overshadow Drina Regatta in Bajina Basta

Although the event is promoted as a recreational tourist gathering for nature lovers, a segment of the participants used the river descent on July 18 and 19 to broadcast deeply derogatory and discriminatory messages.

A shocking video footage that first appeared on TikTok and subsequently spread across the X platform shows groups of people on boats chanting the offensive song "Ne volim te Alija" (I Don't Like You, Alija), alongside the prominent display of photographs featuring convicted war criminals.

The incident carried additional gravity due to its geographical and temporal proximity to Bosnia and Herzegovina, taking place near Bratunac and the broader Srebrenica area. The anti-Bosniak provocations occurred right alongside the Drina River during the days when the global community marked the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

Given that the regatta is officially organized by the local Tourism Organization "Tara-Drina," the Municipality of Bajina Basta, and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism, and Telecommunications of Serbia, the absence of any public condemnation or institutional reaction from local and state structures has reignited concerns regarding the normalization of hate speech and the failure to confront wartime atrocities.
