Lorry drivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) began their announced blockade of customs terminals and access roads on Monday morning, but the protest also caused delays on some major roads within the country, particularly on the route from Sarajevo to the north, towards Croatia.

According to the Automobile and Motorcycle Club of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIHAMK), since 6am approaches to customs terminals have been blocked at border crossings with Croatia – Izacic, Velika Kladusa, Kamensko, Bijaca, Orasje and Bosanski Samac – as well as at five crossings with Serbia.

Passenger traffic at these crossings is not affected, but parked lorries on the roads are causing long queues and difficult conditions in the areas around Doboj, Zenica, Tuzla, Travnik and Mostar.

The Logistika BiH consortium, which brings together most haulage companies in the country, announced that the protest, following the so-called French model, would continue until their demands are met. Under this model, commonly used by French transport workers, hauliers block roads with parked lorries to put pressure on the authorities.

They are calling on the authorities to ensure that lorry drivers from BiH can work without hindrance, exempting them from the restrictions that apply to other travellers entering the European Union. They are also demanding that the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Communications and Transport, and the Ministry of Foreign Trade make it easier for them to do business within the country and speed up the issuing of the necessary permits.
