Air quality in Sarajevo drastically deteriorated on the morning of July 1st, particularly in the municipalities of Novi Grad and Ilidza, following a fire that broke out at the Vojkovici landfill the previous night.

Measurements of pollutant concentrations taken during the day indicate extremely high levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particles at monitoring stations located in Otoka, Ilidza, and the mobile station currently deployed in Novi Grad.

“The source of the pollution remains unknown at this time,” authorities stated.

Health warnings have been issued, particularly for people with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, those prone to severe allergic reactions, the elderly, pregnant women, and young children. These vulnerable groups are strongly advised to remain indoors and pay attention to maintaining clean air quality indoors as well.

The general population is advised to avoid all outdoor physical activity.

“For workers who must remain outdoors for extended periods, the use of face masks with protective respiratory filters is recommended. If prolonged outdoor exposure is unavoidable, FFP2 or FFP3 masks (or N95/N99 in the U.S. classification) should be worn,” the statement added.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as pollution levels remain hazardous.
