For seven days, Srebrbenica’s struggle with wildfires continues. Helicopters, firefighters, civilians, and locals are all battling the massive flame, which has now reached dangerously close to homes.

Radomir Pavlovic, Director of the “Drina” National Park, calls for civil protection to get involved. “We'll try to cut off the fire's path with machinery to save the houses in Demirov Dol,” he says.

Local resident Hamo Zulanovic describes the situation as more than alarming. “No one remembers such a fire here. Over 15,000 square meters are burning,” Zulanovic noted.

Due to the rough terrain, extinguishing the fire from the ground is nearly impossible and too dangerous for both people and equipment. In recent days, a helicopter from the Republika Srpska service was deployed. Currently, three helicopters from the Armed Forces of BiH are active, and help is expected from two more helicopters from Serbia. A state of emergency has been declared in the Luka community, Srebrenica municipality. The air in the village is unbearable due to the heavy smoke, and communication issues persist.

“The situation is worsened by poor communication, given that this mountainous area is 50 km from Srebrenica. It’s difficult to stay in contact with people on the ground,” Adem Mehmedovic, Head of Social Affairs in the Srebrenica municipality said.

The battle against the fire continues relentlessly. There is hope for tomorrow, as meteorologists predict rain in the afternoon in the Srebrenica area.
