The High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, said at a press conference in Sarajevo that he welcomes the announcement that political leaders will be discussing changes to the election law in the coming days, but that if they do not agree, the amendments he imposed will remain in force. He called on politicians to “not play tactical games” regarding the matter. Pročitaj više

When asked about possible changes to the Election Law that the ruling state coalition promised in the coming days, he quoted a German thinker that “there is nothing better than doing something yourself.”

“Local authorities should assume the responsibilities they have. I think that the local authorities should take that responsibility and comply with the standard expected in the elections, which was also confirmed by the OSCE. And if they don't reach an agreement, I will stick to the changes that I made. I am telling politicians not to play tactical games”, he said.

“Local authorities should work on the implementation of the foundations that I incorporated in the changes to the laws that I passed so that the voters fully trust (the election process). There is not much time left because the elections must be organized and all preparations for this and the next elections must be completed”, he said.

Schmidt said that the international community has the task of helping Bosnia and Herzegovina on the way to a better future.

He also spoke about education and emigration.

“More students from Europe should come to BiH and study here. Many do not know in detail what is happening here. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country that should be visited and where people should be staying, not a country which they should be leaving”, Schmidt said.
