As part of the project "Strengthening the migration management system in Bosnia and Herzegovina," the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has donated essential equipment to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Border Police (GPBiH). The donation, valued at €250,000, includes 13 IP telephone centres and a modern data centre.

The official handover ceremony and equipment demonstration took place Wednesday in Sarajevo, attended by BiH BP Director Mirko Kupresakovic, Italian Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarah Eti Castellani, and Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in BiH and Western Balkans Coordinator Laura Lungarotti.

Kupresakovic expressed his gratitude to the Italian government for its ongoing support and cooperation in enhancing migration management and aligning it with EU standards. He also thanked the IOM for its long-standing collaboration and timely implementation of the BiH Border Police's needs.

“The BiH Border Police needs a stable, secure, and efficient communication system. This donation will significantly improve our communication across all units,” Kupresakovic said. He emphasized the importance of the system for faster information exchange, operational activities, and measures to combat crime and protect the country's borders.

Ambassador Castellani highlighted Italy's comprehensive support for Bosnia and Herzegovina, focusing on institutional functionality, migration management, and digital transformation. “Through financial investments, technological donations, and collaborative projects, Italy is committed to assisting Bosnia and Herzegovina in meeting EU standards and achieving sustainable development,” she stated.

The IOM is implementing the “Strengthening the migration management system in Bosnia and Herzegovina” project, valued at €2,000,000. The project aims to support BiH authorities in managing mixed migration flows and enhancing border management capacities.

Head of IOM Mission in BiH, Laura Lungarotti, emphasized the importance of the partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Italian government in addressing global challenges. “Through joint efforts, we can ensure the effective use of resources, improve security, and promote sustainable management practices,” she said.

Lungarotti added that the goal is to establish a comprehensive migration management system in BiH. “The trust placed in IOM reflects our commitment to providing effective solutions that meet the needs of our partners and communities,” she concluded.

The donation aims to enhance the BiH Border Police's capacity to fully implement the integrated border management concept and respond to threats posed by organized cross-border crime. The BiH Border Police operates six regional field offices, each overseeing multiple border crossing units. This complex structure requires a stable and efficient communication system, previously based on ISDN technology. With the planned shutdown of the ISDN network, modernizing the telecommunications infrastructure for SIP trunking was crucial.
