The EU is the most responsible for the migrant crisis on BiH because they were the ones who closed the borders in 2016, Nidzara Ahmetspahic, a journalist and human rights activist told N1 Tuesday.

“When they close the borders – the horror starts. The images we see today in Bosnia were the images we saw from Lesbos, Greece. The closed borders and the police protecting the borders is a dangerous and brutal violation of human rights,” Ahmetspahic said.

In her opinion, this region is ideal for migrants because it is governed by autocrats who do not know their job “who can only produce this kind of humanitarian crisis.”

In her opinion, migrants are not the ones causing the crisis, but politicians – “EU politicians, our politicians, all of them.”

“We can expect only the worse, much worse,” Ahmetspahic noted.

International Organisation for Migrations (IOM) is to blame

In her opinion, not only have the migrants in Bosnia been dehumanised but Bosnian residents are also humiliated.

“The IOM with all the money they have only made ‘concentration’ camps – which serve as good PR. When they show the images of those camps, their logos, that reminds me of the ‘90s when the UNHCR have us nylon covers for windows. They are beaten by the police and don't have freedom of speech. Some migrants who spoke to journalists were deported from the country. I was banned from entering IOM camps. Those ‘concentration’ camps are full of misery,” the human rights activist told N1.

She added that migrants situated in Ushivak camp, north-west Bosnia, do not have warm water and that media only bring fuel to the fire by portraying them as a threat.

“The only solution is open borders. They want to go. Half of them have families in the EU. They have the right to move. There's a simple solution. We have an economic crisis which will only get worse. Our hotels and hostels are empty, why not put them there,” N1's guest asked. “The IOM said camps must be set in place – no they don't. This is a small number of people. In 2018, the IOM and the EU decided that BiH is incapable of dealing with this issue, letting the IOM deal with it – this is what their leadership gave us.”
