A monument to the murdered Serb citizens of Sarajevo was desecrated on Kazani cliffs above Sarajevo, N1 learned from the Sarajevo Canton Police, who added that they are still searching for the perpetrator.
“Caco lives in us. No. 10”, was written in red spray paint on the monument.
Fourteen soldiers of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) have been convicted to sentences ranging from 10 months to six years in prison for the crimes at Kazani.
The crime was committed by members of the 10th Mountain Brigade of the ARBiH under the command of Musan Topalovic Caco.
The mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karic, condemned the vandalism on her official Facebook profile.
“I strongly condemn the barbaric act of desecrating the monument to the murdered citizens of Sarajevo at Kazani. I am proud that I remained persistent in the decision to erect the memorial at Kazani after almost three decades. I approached this very openly and honestly because every victim killed during the siege of our city deserves respect and a dignified monument. That's why I'm very proud that I took the first concrete step and started a process to which time will give an answer,” said Karic.
“Sarajevo has always nurtured tolerance and coexistence, and such and similar outbursts will never have a suitable ground in this city. I call on all citizens for peace, dignity and control of their emotions, and the competent authorities to discover the perpetrators, punish them appropriately and inform the public about it. The monument will be restored within 24 hours,” the Mayor concluded.
