Zeljko Komsic, the Chairman of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency, addressed the Crimea Platform summit in Kyiv on Thursday, expressing clear and unequivocal support to the Ukrainian people in the fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea.
“I am coming from a country that was also a victim of aggression and an attempt of violent seizing of territory. Just like in case of Ukraine, the aggression of a far stronger and larger military force towards Bosnia and Herzegovina was preceded by political, media, economic, and all other forms of aggression, including cultural – in an attempt to deny cultural identity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its people, representing them as made up, despite a thousand-year long history of existence of Bosnian statehood,” said Komsic.
He stressed that in the 1992 referendum the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina chose an independent, sovereign, multi-ethnic, democratic, European BiH.
“That democratic expression of will of a vast majority of citizens of my country was met with aggression, ethnic cleansing, war camps, genocide in Srebrenica, the siege of the capital Sarajevo,” said the Presidency Chairman.
He then compared the experience of Bosnia with that of Ukraine, recalling of the events from the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014, when the citizen and parliament of Ukraine clearly said they wanted to head towards the free world and the European Union.
“We feared of the same scenario that we experienced twenty years earlier – an illegal aggression and attempt of annexation of sovereign Ukrainian teritory,” he said.
Komsic underlined that these acts were a clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations, the Helsinki Final Act, as well as the Friendship Agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, the seizure of Crimea, followed by ethnic cleansing and numerous other violations of human rights and freedoms, was only a prelude to the continuation of the aggression that followed in February 2022. This time, the goal of the aggressors was and remains the overthrow of the democratically elected Ukrainian authorities, the submission of the Ukrainian people to the regime in the Kremlin. Together, we must resist such intentions and protect the basic principles of international law and order, on which the security, stability and prosperity of the entire world depend. The inviolability of state borders, as well as the political independence of sovereign countries, must be collectively protected. There must be no compromise on these matters. Defending its right to exist and be free, Ukraine today pays a huge price for defending those basic principles. That is why we must be loud and clear in supporting Ukraine and condemning the aggressors. Thank you for your attention. Glory to Ukraine!,” Komsic said at the end of his speech.
Komsic and Presidency member Denis Becirovic are currently in Ukraine, for the first time since the beginning of the Russian aggression.
Within their visit, they already met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and visited memorial sites, paying respects to the victims of the war.
