The Kremlin on Thursday condemned the one-year prison sentence handed down on Wednesday to the president of BiH's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Milorad Dodik, calling the criminal prosecution against him "political" and warning of "negative consequences" for the Balkans.

“Putin has met with Dodik on numerous occasions. We greatly appreciate the trust and constructive working relationship that has developed between Putin and Dodik. And, of course, we value our historical fraternal ties between Russians and Serbs. What happened in Sarajevo certainly provokes our negative reaction,” said Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson.

“We condemn such actions because they can have very negative consequences for the situation not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also in the Balkans as a whole. These are actions that will and could lead to destabilization, which is very bad. We consider this prosecution of Dodik to be entirely political in nature and directed not only against Dodik personally but, in fact, against all patriotic Serbian forces. This is also unacceptable. It is based on pseudo-law imposed by the so-called High Representative Schmidt—let's not forget that the UN Security Council never approved him, so he is nothing but a fraudster, and therefore, his move can hardly be considered legitimate. That is why we condemn it.”

In conclusion, they called on everyone to “be guided by the spirit, ideas, and provisions of Dayton.”

“We believe that such actions can have disastrous consequences and call on everyone, first and foremost those behind such disastrous decisions, to be guided by the spirit, ideas, and provisions of Dayton. Only that can stabilize the situation and make it fair, predictable, and equal for all.”
