Lightning kills over 30 sheep in Bosnia storm

The lightning struck a flock on Mount Hrbina near Kupres at around 1 p.m., killing between 30 and 35 sheep. Photos of the dead animals were shared on social media. No people were injured.

Earlier in the day, the European Storm Forecast Experiment (ESTOFEX) issued its highest, level-three warning for parts of the Balkans, citing the risk of destructive winds, large hail and severe thunderstorms.

The worst of the storms hit Herzegovina, where a supercell thunderstorm was recorded over the Ljubuski and Citluk areas, bringing torrential rain, frequent lightning and strong winds.

The storm also affected the Čapljina area. In the historic village of Počitelj, strong winds felled trees onto the M-17 main road, prompting an intervention by firefighters.

Large hail also hit Grude,turning roads and gardens into winter-like landscapes within minutes and causing damage to farmland.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms flooded streets in the capital, Sarajevo.

Torrential rain, strong winds and hail also struck Bugojno and Donji Vakuf in central Bosnia, damaging crops, orchards and gardens, while some buildings sustained roof damage.

Storms were also reported in the Nevesinje and Stolac areas, where hailstones as large as a fist were recorded.
