A man considered to be the main suspect in an investigation into the murder of two Sarajevo police officers in 2018 has surrendered to prosecutors in Sarajevo Canton, it was confirmed on Friday.

The suspect is 37-year-old Aleksandar Macan, for whom a red Interpol notice was issued a month ago and who arrived at the Prosecutor's Office in Sarajevo in the company of his lawyer, after which he was arrested.

He had been on the run since 4 November, when a police operation to arrest him failed. He was believed to have fled to Serbia but where exactly he had been hiding and how he had arrived at the Prosecutor's Office in downtown Sarajevo without being stopped is not known.

Police officers Davor Vujinovic and Adis Sehovic were killed while on regular patrol in the Sarajevo neighbourhood of Alipacino Polje on 26 October 2018 after they came across a group of criminals trying to steal a car. The criminals opened fire from machine guns at the two officers and killed them.

There had been no headway in the investigation into the crime until November this year, when police discovered leads pointing to Macan's involvement by analysing communication via an online application.

He was believed to have escaped with the help of his wife who works at the police station in Pale, outside Sarajevo. A search of their cottage near Pale turned up three rifles and a sniper scope.

Macan's wife is the daughter of Milomir Savcic, former Bosnian Serb army general indicted for war crimes. At the start of his trial before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he escaped to Serbia and has been hiding there.
