A massive protest led by students and supported by citizens is taking place in Belgrade under the slogan "15 for 15," referring to the 15 victims who lost their lives when a canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad Railway Station. According to the students’ plan, the main gathering will take place at 4 pm in front of the Serbian Parliament, with an additional stage set up nearby at Slavija Square.
For days, students have been marching from various parts of the country, and by Friday evening, all had arrived in Belgrade. Some ran all the way to the capital, others arrived by bicycle, many walked, while an even greater number used public transportation. Thousands of citizens welcomed them in the city center, and the gathering lasted for hours, attracting coverage from international media.
This is the fourth major protest in the country, while smaller gatherings continue to take place daily in multiple cities across Serbia. These protests are held in support of the students’ demands for institutional accountability and an end to corruption, which they argue led to the tragedy that claimed 15 lives. Additionally, citizens across Serbia observe a moment of silence each day at 11:52 am, the exact time the canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, standing in tribute for 15 minutes—one for each victim.
Before reaching Belgrade, students marched and ran to Novi Sad, Kragujevac, and Nis—three of Serbia’s largest university cities.
Since early morning, more citizens and students have been arriving in Belgrade, primarily using private transportation, as numerous bus departures were canceled. By 10 am, large crowds had already gathered at four designated locations from which they would march toward the city center. On Friday night, student organizers released a plan outlining where the main protest would be held and the four rallying points from which demonstrators would converge.
Massive columns of people are now moving toward the center of Belgrade. So far, two incidents have been reported. In one case, a driver attempted to force his way through a protest column, hitting three people, who were subsequently taken to the Emergency Center. The police quickly arrested the driver. In another incident, a man threatened students with bombs while they were assisting in security efforts, but he was also swiftly apprehended by authorities.
