The local community in Bosanska Krupa is in shock after a brutal incident that left one police officer dead and another seriously injured. Armin Halitovic, Mayor of Bosanska Krupa, urged the public to rely only on verified and truthful information. Speaking to the media, Halitovic expressed his deep concern over the attack, noting that the city has always been peaceful and has no history of serious issues.
“This morning, I met with citizens, and you can see the sadness on their faces. Smiles are absent, which is only natural after everything that has happened,” Halitovic said. “People are in disbelief, asking how this could have happened. They expect serious changes to address incidents like this because we, as a local community, can’t handle this alone. This needs to be addressed at the state level.”
The Mayor said he only learned details about the young perpetrator, a teenager involved in the attack, late last night. While he refrained from discussing specifics to avoid interfering with the investigation, he emphasized the importance of only spreading the truth to the public. “I’ve called on citizens in Bosanska Krupa and across the country to trust only reliable news sources. We’ll likely see an influx of fake news sites and profiles spreading fear, along with commenters and bots adding to the panic,” Halitovic cautioned. “Staying calm and trusting the authorities—the prosecution, police, and judiciary—is crucial for getting to the bottom of this. Let this be the last time something like this happens.”
While not confirmed, Halitovic expects officials from security agencies and representatives from higher levels of government to arrive in Bosanska Krupa on Friday to expand and support the investigation.
Police spokesperson Adnan Beganovic provided details of the attack, explaining that the teenage suspect, identified as S.E. (born in 2009), entered the Bosanska Krupa police station unprovoked and attacked two officers with a knife.
“One officer tragically passed away en route to the hospital, while the other, who sustained serious injuries, is now stable after surgery and remains under medical supervision in intensive care,” Beganovic stated.
The crime has been classified as terrorism, with police and prosecutors working to establish a full understanding of the events. “Last night, from 10:45 pm until 12:30 am, the prosecutor from the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office of Una-Sana Canton, along with investigators from the criminal police sector, conducted a thorough investigation at the scene. The prosecutor confirmed that this incident bears the characteristics of a terrorist act, and the investigation is ongoing,” said Beganovic.
Coordination meetings are currently being held in Bihac, where officials from various government levels are discussing the next steps in handling the incident. The Federation (FBiH) entity’s Police Administration has raised the security alert level, deploying specialized police units alongside local officers to ensure the safety of both officers and citizens.
Beganovic also noted that, by order of the Una-Sana Canton Prosecutor's Office, a scheduled press conference was canceled to prevent compromising the investigation and allow for a complete assessment of the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
