Following the news that Bosnia's special police (SIPA) has searched two locations in the Sarajevo Canton regarding the controversial case of the death of 21-year-old Dzenan Memic, both his father and the father of David Dragicevic, another young man whose controversial death shocked the BiH public said Monday they hope the Prosecution will find out the truth about Dzenan and start investigating the death of David Dragicevic.
“It finally happened after five long years. Ifet (Feraget, the lawyer of the Memic family) told me at the beginning ‘Muriz, this will take five years.’ Although this is not the end yet, this is just the beginning. I knew about this, we were silent, we had to be. I knew that this day would come,” Muriz Memic told N1.
He added that he believed in the state-level Prosecution from the beginning.
Bosnia's State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) conducted two searched Monday morning of persons who are believed to be connected with the death of Dzenan Memic in 2016. one of the individually whose premises were searched is said to be an official in one of the Sarajevo Canton's institutions.
Dzenan Memic was 21 years old when his body was discovered in February 2016 in Sarajevo.
The Court initially ruled that Memic died after being struck by a car, but in a recent trial, those accused of causing the accident were cleared of responsibility.
The father of the young man, Muriz Memic, was satisfied with the ruling because he never believed that his son's death accidental. He is convinced that local authorities, specifically the Prosecutor’s Office, are trying to protect the murderers of Dzenan.
“I couldn't promise myself that this day would come, but I firmly believed in it. I am convinced that this is the beginning of some changes in the judiciary because opportunities such as the Dzenan Memic and David Dragicevic cases must not be missed,” said the lawyer of the Memic and Dragicevic family – Ifet Feraget.
David's father Davor Dragicevic hopes that the Prosecutor's Office of BiH will take steps in the case of David Dragicevic as well.
“As our lawyer of the Memic and Dragicevic families, Mr Feraget, said, we hope that this is finally an opportunity for the Prosecutor's Office and the entire judicial system to show their strength. The evidence that Mr Memic and I have, obviously points to the fact that it is a cover-up of the murder of our sons David and Dzenan. I hope that the Prosecutor's Office will take over the Dragicevic case with the aim of finding out who killed my son,” Dragicevic told N1.
In March 2018, the authorities discovered the body of 21-year-old David Dragicevic in a local river in the northern-Bosnian town of Banjaluka. Police initially said the death was the result of drowning, but the family and all those involved in the ‘Justice for David’ group say the police are trying to hide the perpetrators of the murder.
The protests that followed turned into an ongoing anti-government movement.
Dragicevic’s death and the allegations against the authorities caused shock-waves in Bosnia's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, but also the entire country.
David's body was exhumed and reburied in Austria, in March 2019, following his parents’ claims he would not find peace in Banjaluka as long as his case remains unresolved and perpetrators unpunished.
