MEPs skeptical of progress on Bosnia's EU path

It is hard to expect a significant progress on Bosnia's road to the European Union these days, the European Parliament representatives said after concluding their visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday. MEP Tineke Strike has warned that there are laws in Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity that mean the transfer of competencies from the state level, which undermines the state.

It is clear how major this problem is, especially in the light of the fact that the state institutions are idle, she noted, adding that this is only one of the expectations from the Bosnian authorities.

Strik also emphasised the necessity of holding “free, democratic” elections and that it is up to citizens now to decide who will be leading them.

MEP Viola von Cramon said she was surpsised by “neutrality” that some in Bosnia and Herzegovina expressed towards the war in Ukraine, considering the war the country had gone through.

As for the Bosnia's EU path, the parliamentarian said the country could get the candidate status but under specific conditions.

Europe has been uniting significantly over the Russia's aggression, she stressed, adding that it is necessary to persist and show solidarity with Ukraine.
