Montenegro’s President Milo Djukanovic, representatives of opposition political parties and non-governmental organizations, as well as the head of the country’s Islamic Community strongly condemned a recent statement of Justice Minister Vladimir Leposavic, who said on Friday that he is prepared to recognize that genocide was committed in Srebrenica "once this is proven unequivocally."
Leposavic, an international law expert known for being a member of the legal team of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, argued that the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, which ruled that genocide took place in Srebrenica, has “lost its legitimacy.”

“As long as there are ideologies that deny the crimes committed, the danger of new suffering does not cease,” Djukanovic said, repeating a statement he made in July 2020.
“Srebrenica is a synonym for crime, but we must do everything to make it synonymous with justice as well,” he stressed at the time, marking the anniversary of the genocide.
The Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro announced that it will initiate a law banning the denial of genocide and urged Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic to state his views Leposavic statements.
Montenegro’s Islamic Community head, Rifat Fejzic, said that “if we in Montenegro do not know that genocide took place in Srebrenica, based on the decision of the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague and if that is the position of the Montenegrin government, then I am afraid that our path is not toward the EU “.
The spokesman of the Bosniak Party in Montenegro, Adel Omeragic, warned that the denial of genocide is unacceptable, especially considering that Montenegro is on the course of a pro-European policy.
“Such and similar moves only confirm the thesis that the Government of Zdravko Krivokapic is, consciously or not, moving away from European values,” he told Pobjeda.
