Montenegro's Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic drew fierce criticism on Monday for saying that the genocide in Srebrenica was not committed against Bosniak but against people, leading him to apologize for not expressing his thoughts clearly.
Speaking at the Potocari memorial complex, Abazovic said: “The genocide was not committed against Bosniaks but against people and not by armies but by policies of evil, death and deception”.

Podgorica Mayor and senior official of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Ivan Vukovic found it necessary to apologize to “friends in Bosnia-Herzegovina” over Abazovic’s words. A Twitter post said that he laid a wreath for the victims of Srebrenica and added that he wished that this would never happen again. Social Democrat Party (SDP) MP Draginja Vuksanovic Stankovic said the prime minister should be ashamed. Criticism came from other officials and public figures.
Abazovic apologized in a Twitter post to the Mothers of Srebrenica for “a thought not expressed clearly”. “Every action depends on its goal and my goal is peace. The genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica should never be repeated,” he wrote.
The commemorations and burial of identified victims of Srebrenica are held yearly at the Potocari memorial complex on the anniversary of the date in July 1995 that Bosnian Serb forces under the command of General Ratko Mladic took control of the town and Dutch UN peacekeeper base and the ensuing mass executions of Bosnian Muslim (Bosniak) men and boys.
