The Civil Protection and Firefighting Service of the City of Mostar issued an appeal to citizens due to the drastically increased risk of wildfires in the area of Mostar and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, caused by extremely high temperatures and a prolonged dry period.

The service called on residents to strictly follow fire prevention measures in order to prevent large-scale disasters, like those the area has witnessed in recent days.

It was emphasized that lighting fires in open areas is strictly prohibited. This includes burning weeds, dry grass, and other plant waste; lighting fires in forests and agricultural areas; using barbecues in locations that are not designated or safe for that purpose; and discarding cigarette butts or other flammable materials.

The Civil Protection and Firefighting Service reminded the public that violations of the Fire Protection and Firefighting Law of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton carry heavy financial penalties. In cases where a fire causes major property damage or loss of life, offenders may also face criminal liability.

''Your responsibility and conscientious behavior are crucial for protecting our forests, property, and most importantly, human lives. Let us act responsibly and protect ourselves together,'' officials from the City of Mostar said.

Citizens are urged to immediately report any fire by calling the Professional Firefighting Unit at 123 or the Civil Protection Operations Center of the City of Mostar at 121.
