A new case of femicide in Bosnia and Herzegovina was confirmed on Monday after police determined that a 38-year-old man killed a woman and then attempted to take his own life.

The crime occurred in the town of Sipovo, in the northwestern part of BiH. The police in Republika Srpska reported that the man first killed the woman in a car and then tried to commit suicide. He was found in critical condition and transported to a hospital, while investigators are working to uncover the full circumstances of the tragedy.

Local media reported that the perpetrator, Nikola Cumbo, was in a common-law relationship with the victim, Andjelka M. (34), and they had two young children together. Cumbo had reportedly been previously punished for domestic violence.

This incident of femicide comes just a day after gatherings were held across BiH to mark the anniversary of the murder of Nizama Hecimovic, who was brutally killed by Nermin Sulejmanovic in Gradacac before he also took his own life.

Despite widespread outrage, condemnation, and calls for stricter penalties for femicide and better protection for women at risk from violent partners, 13 women have been killed in similar circumstances in BiH over the past year. Nine of these women were killed by their husbands, and in other cases, the perpetrators were individuals who had known or had a relationship with their victims.
