The Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Banja Luka, Zoran Pilicic, has issued a sharp condemnation following a physical assault on a first-class consul and his brother in the center of the city. Describing the event as a "deplorable act," Pilicic confirmed that the accredited diplomat and his sibling were targeted by a group of approximately ten young individuals.

According to Pilicic, the attack was brutal and persistent. The victims were reportedly pursued and beaten through the streets of Banja Luka for nearly half an hour.

"They were beaten and, so to speak, chased for almost thirty minutes. When they were caught, they were beaten again while being subjected to offensive slurs such as 'Ustasha’," Pilicic told RTVHB.

Despite the intensity of the confrontation, the Consul General noted that the victims did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The consul and his brother are currently recovering from hematomas, bruising, and scratches.

Calls for decisive action from authorities

The Croatian Embassy has officially reported the incident to the competent authorities at both state and the entity of Republika Srpska level. While the police have intervened and are working to identify the perpetrators, Pilicic emphasized the need for a response without "any relativization" of the crime.

"We expect all institutions to urgently and decisively involve themselves in the investigation, identify, and prosecute the perpetrators," Pilicic stated, adding that the safety of all diplomatic representatives and citizens must be guaranteed.

Zagreb Informed of the Incident

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs in Zagreb has been fully briefed on the situation, and diplomatic measures are being taken at the state level. Pilicic concluded his statement by calling for a resolute stance against violence and the promotion of a culture of dialogue, insisting that the incident must be fully brought to light.
