Speaking at the UN General Assembly, several countries voiced their opposition to the UN Resolution on the Srebrenica genocide. The common reason they all stated was the lack of consensus regarding the Resolution in the country and fears of unrest in the region.

The representative of China in the United Nations spoke immediately after the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, saying that they saw “no alternative but to vote against” the Resolution.

He began his speech by saying that “Bosnia and Herzegovina must also understand the coexistence of all its ethnic groups.” However, China sees “a big controversy” in the text of the Resolution.

“China has repeatedly requested full communication with key member states in order to improve the process based on consensus. The hasty vote on the draft was marked by big differences and the lack of harmony in Bosnia and Herzegovina. That is why we have no alternative but to vote against it. China will continue to work on strengthening friendly relations with all ethnic groups in the country and have a key role in peace and stability in the country and the region,” he said.

Neville Gertze, permanent representative of Namibia at the UN, in his speech, said that everything that is happening in Palestine is genocide.

“There was genocide in Srebrenica. What is happening in Palestine (Gaza) at the moment is genocide,” he said.

Stating that many genocides in the world have taken place but have not been marked by UN resolutions forced his country to abstain during the vote.

The Ambassador of Azerbaijan said in his address to the UN General Assembly that his country would not vote on this issue.

“We closely followed the consideration of the draft resolution titled International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995 and carefully took into account the submissions of all interested parties. Azerbaijan has a strategic partnership with the Balkan countries based on close historical ties, mutual respect and common interests and attaches importance to the development of relations and cooperation with them and is generally interested in peace, security and stability in the region,” the ambassador said, among other things.
