Top BiH officials should serve as an example of building political discourse and it is regrettable that they would find themselves in the company of people who make death threats against others, the Office of the High Representative of the international community told N1.
Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday in Banja Luka, the administrative centre of Bosnia’s Serb-majority Republika Srpska (RS) entity, to protest against the decision of High Representative Christian Schmidt who suspended the RS Law on Immovable Property.
Many officials joined the protest, including BiH Presidency member and leader of the ruling party in the RS, Milorad Dodik.
After Dodik arrived, a group of people gathered around him and began singing a song that contained death threats targeting Schmidt. Dodik did not join in but smiled as the group sang the song.
N1 asked the Office of the High Representative (OHR) for a comment.
“The OHR strongly supports freedom of expression, but at the same time regrets the fact that top BiH and RS officials have allowed themselves to find themselves in such an uncalled-for situation,” the institution said, adding that those in positions of authority “have a responsibility to serve as an example for building political discourse and relationships among people.”
“The mentioned behaviour was not the brightest moment, neither for RS nor for BiH as a whole. As for the question of whether the participants in the event themselves violated any law, the police and prosecutors should decide on it,” the OHR told N1.
