The shells caused massive damage, killing many citizens and destroying homes, as well as cultural and religious buildings and even hospitals.

The siege began with the killing of Suada Dilberovic and Olga Sucic and would last for the next 44 months, a total of 1,425 days, which is the longest siege of a city in modern history.

More than 11,000 civilians were killed in the city, of which around 1,600 were children, and more than 50,000 civilians were wounded.

An estimated 500,000 missiles were fired at the city during the siege, an average of 329 per day.

The UN court sentenced the wartime commander of the Republika Srpska Army, Ratko Mladic, as well as the wartime president of the Republika Srpska, Radovan Karadzic, to life imprisonment for numerous crimes, including the tererorising of the citizens of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1995.
