The Serbian Orthodox Church and its faithful are celebrating Christmas on Wednesday, the most joyful Christian holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians celebrate Christmas as a universal feast, as it represents what they believe to be the birth of the holiest child in human history and the birth of the Savior.

The yule log symbolizes the oak wood that shepherds brought into the Bethlehem cave where tradition says Jesus was born. The sparks that fly toward the sky from the wood announce his birth. Jesus Christ came among people to emphasize the importance of nurturing values such as faith and love.

According to the Gospel, Jesus Christ was born exactly at midnight when the brightest star, traveling from east to west, stopped above the cave near Bethlehem. In that cave, Mary wrapped the newborn Savior in straw and worshiped him as God. At that moment, angels in heaven sang, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." The shepherds were the first to bow to the Holy Child, gifting him a lamb, followed by three wise men who brought gifts of myrrh, frankincense, and gold.

Alongside Easter, Christmas is the most significant Orthodox holiday. On this day, Christians traditionally attend church services. Orthodox believers attend Matins and the Divine Liturgy, receive communion, and then return to their warm homes where a rich feast is prepared. They celebrate with family in their homes alongside the first guest, a chosen guest, who is usually a baptized male child. The days following Christmas are also holidays with their own specific customs.

Instead of usual greetings, people greet each other on Christmas with "Christ is born" and respond with "Truly He is born." Orthodox believers marked Christmas Eve yesterday by lighting the yule log.

The N1 portal and television editorial teams wish a Merry Christmas to all Orthodox believers, wishing them to spend the day in love, health, and happiness with their loved ones.
