Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani on Thursday described as “racist” European officials’ remarks regarding the opening of the bridge on the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica, and said the issue should not be discussed in Brussels.
“We have nothing to ask Serbia about this, just as this spokesperson, I believe he is from Slovakia, does not ask any neighbouring countries for permission when he wants to cross a bridge in his country. Serbia has no say regarding the bridge on the territory of Kosovo. No one should accept dialogue with Serbia on this matter,” said Osmani.
She added that engaging in such dialogue would be “unconstitutional and undermine Kosovo’s sovereignty,” but stressed the importance of dialogue with allies.
“The American soldiers serving in Kosovo, who are prepared to risk their lives, just as our soldiers and police officers are, deserve that we sit down and speak with them. It’s the least we can do. I urge citizens to accept the US request to sit down and talk with them, but not as if they are against Kosovo, and even less against the opening of the bridge, as that would be illogical and contrary to the interests of Kosovo,” stated Osmani.
She emphasized that “using the same tactics against our friends as we do against Serbia is unforgivable for a nation that exists today because its friends have not turned their backs on it.”
