After the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Our Party (NS) decided to withdraw from further negotiations on Bosnia’s Election reform, on Wednesday, citing a lack of transparency and threats to Bosnia’s constitutional and legal order.
“Negotiations on the Election Law in the format they have been conducted so far have been doomed from the start. From their inception, we have warned of two crucial things that led to such an outcome. The first is the non-transparency of the negotiation process. Efforts were made to satisfy the particular interests of the ruling ethnic-oriented parties, and the opposition, ie the civic parties, were invited to the negotiations with the unfounded expectation that we would be Mr Izetbegovic's support and agree to a position from which we cannot influence the content of the agreement,” NS said.
“The second thing is the treatment of the Election Law without unblocking state institutions and the violation of the constitutional and legal order of the country thus threatening peace. It was pointless to conduct negotiations in such an atmosphere,” they added.
US State Department official in charge of electoral reform in BiH Matthew Palmer and Angelina Eichhorst, director of the European External Action Service (EEAS), stayed in BiH in early december ti discuss amending the BiH Election Law so as to remove discrimination and implement ECtHR verdicts filed by BiH citizens who were prevented from running from office simply because they were not from one of three constituent peoples in BiH (Bosniaks, Serbs or Croats). The negotiations yielded no results and the two said they would come back later for another round of talks.
On Wednesday some BiH politicians said they were told the two postponed the visit until further notice. Prior to Our Party's announcement, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) also announced they would pull out of the talks citing the crisis in the country and a threat to peace and stability.
But ending the negotiations does not mean the end of the party’s diplomatic and political pressure, which they say they will continue to create in favour of resolving the crisis.
They added they would continue to invest efforts in finding sources of foreign policy towards BiH in Brussels, Washington, London and Berlin in order to stop Bosnian Serb Presidency member Milorad Dodik's offensive and put concrete solutions on the table.
