Over 7,600 still missing in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The final act of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place in the municipality of Srebrenica and its surrounding areas, where 85 mass graves have been discovered to date, according to Amor Masovic, former director and member of the Board of Directors of the Missing Persons Institute.

Speaking at a forum on the Srebrenica genocide organized by the Yunus Emre Institute in Sarajevo, Masovic highlighted key statistics about atrocities committed during the 1991–1995 aggression in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The final act of genocide in Bosnia occurred in the Srebrenica municipality and nearby areas, where 85 mass graves, both primary and secondary, have been located so far. Most of these are secondary graves, which is unprecedented globally. Nowhere else are mass graves so frequently relocated as in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Masovic explained.

He noted that more than 7,600 people are still missing across Bosnia, the majority of whom are Bosniaks, numbering over 5,000.

“So far, over 7,100 victims of the Srebrenica genocide have been identified, leaving approximately 1,200 victims still unaccounted for. The remains of identified victims are incomplete, often comprising just a single bone or a few skeletal fragments,” said Masovic.

He acknowledged the likelihood that not all victims of war crimes and genocide in Srebrenica will ever be found.

“Some victims physically no longer exist due to their remains being burned, moved, thrown into artificial lakes or rivers, or because there are no longer witnesses to their burial sites. While I hope the number of unrecovered victims will be smaller than anticipated, the urgency is clear: many families still searching for their loved ones deserve closure. Finding them decades later, after surviving family members have passed away, would render the search almost futile,” he emphasized.

At the Srebrenica–Potocari Memorial Center, 6,765 genocide victims have been laid to rest. An additional 250 victims were buried in local cemeteries at the request of surviving family members.
