The incident began around 10:30 am when police noticed a vehicle driving dangerously through the city. After the two occupants refused to stop for officers, a chase ensued that ended near the Novi Grad neighbourhood.
"One suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the Jala River," the police statement read. "Due to high water levels and powerful currents, the individual was immediately in danger of drowning."
Three officers entered the water in a rescue attempt. While two managed to escape with a civilian's help, the third officer and the suspect were carried away by the raging waters.
An intensive search operation is now underway involving all available police units, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, and Armed Forces members, with assistance from local volunteers.
"We are using all resources to locate the missing individuals, but conditions remain extremely challenging due to the river's high flow rate," a MoI TK spokesperson said.
The Jala River has been running dangerously high following days of heavy rainfall in the region. The incident has shocked the Tuzla community, where emergency services continue their around-the-clock search efforts.
