The Balkans region is undergoing a region-wide energy collapse, the first of its kind. Breakdowns have been reported across four states.

According to unofficial information from the Croatian transmission system operator, there was a breakdown of the power grid through four countries – first, it started in Montenegro, then the power cut affected Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and then parts of Croatia – all of Dalmatia, all the way to Rijeka.

According to Hina, there has never been a breakdown of the power system in four countries.

Currently, dispatchers are frantically talking to each other, state to state, to determine what happened and to come up with a recovery plan, because no state can be isolated in terms of power supply since they are all connected by transmission lines.

The cause is not yet known, so far it is speculated that high temperatures caused power consumption to skyrocket and that the system collapsed at one point.

Power outage in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Although the exact reasons for the breakdown of the system are not yet known, it is assumed that the cause of the overload on the regional interconnecting 400 kV transmission line caused an outage in the BiH system.

Activities on system restoration, the transmission of voltage to hydropower plants and thermal power plants and coordinated activities with the system operator (NOS BiH) on the inclusion of high-voltage network facilities in BiH and their connection to neighbouring systems are underway, Bosnia's Elektroprivreda power company said.

CEDIS (Montenegro) said that the power went out due to an outage on the Montenegrin Electric Transmission System (CGES) network.
