Denis Becirovic, the Bosniak member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency, urged the European Union to take specific steps to preserve the peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including through the increase of EU military deployment (EUFOR) in the country.
Becirovic met with EU Special Representative in BiH Johann Sattler on Thursday, to discuss current developments in the country, warning about some critical matters.
“Local and international representatives must not close their eyes before the fact that unprecedented attack on the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina and fundamental provisions of the Dayton Peace Agreement is still underway. It is impossible to seriously resolve any issue in our country before the return to the constitutionality and legality frameworks. That must be a priority number one for both international and local officials. European Union is one of the witnesses of the Dayton Peace Agreement and has an international obligation to preserve the peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region,” he stressed.
He also expressed full commitment to speeding up BiH's EU path, noting that he has launched a series of activities to accelerate the process.
“However, at this very moment, all local and international officials must focus on the protection of constitutional order of the state as a fundamental precondition to preserve the peace and stability. Bosnia and Herzegovina is at a significant crossroads,” Becirovic said, adding that the international community must not allow Milorad Dodik, the president of Bosnia's Serb-majority region Republika Srpska, to buy time and draw attention from the attack on the constitutional order and undermining the institution of the Office of the High Representative and the Constitutional Court of BiH.
According to him, this would mean the introduction to the state of anarchy with immense consequences.
Ambassador Sattler said BiH needs to speed up the process of European integration, stressing the necessity of ending the policy of destabilisation and getting engaged in finding solutions to the life problems of BiH citizens.
European Union is a friend that is extending its hand and politicians in BiH need to accept it, he added.
