The Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Zeljeznice FBiH) have announced that the reconstructed railway line in Donja Jablanica is once again operational. Following a successful test phase and technical inspection, the FBiH Ministry of Spatial Planning issued an official usage permit on January 30, 2025. With all conditions met, freight and passenger traffic on the Sarajevo–Capljina route, extending further to Ploce, is set to resume.

Starting Thursday, freight trains will be the first to re-enter service, while passenger transport on the Sarajevo–Capljina–Ploce route is scheduled to resume on February 10, 2025.

The devastating weather events of October 4, 2024, led to an almost four-month-long suspension of railway traffic, resulting in an estimated revenue loss of 22.5 million Bosnian marks for Zeljeznice FBiH.

The reconstruction of the Donja Jablanica railway was made possible through a generous donation from the Turkish company Cengiz Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S. – Zenica Branch, which provided both project documentation and construction work. The restoration efforts began on December 10, 2024, and were completed by January 23, 2025.

This successful project was achieved with the support of several key partners and donors:

• The Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Sarajevo (project documentation review)

• IGH Institute d.o.o. Mostar (construction supervision)

• INFRA d.o.o. Sarajevo (railway reconstruction design)

Additionally, the contribution of Zeljeznice FBiH workers was instrumental in the timely completion of the project. Their swift installation of the railway’s upper structure and contact network ensured both timely execution and the safety of railway operations, Zeljeznice FBiH stated.
