The traditional cannon blast from Sarajevo’s Yellow Fortress marked the beginning of Ramadan for Muslims across Bosnia and Herzegovina, ushering in a month defined by spiritual reflection, restraint, and hope amid global and local hardship.

For many believers, Ramadan brings mixed emotions - personal joy rooted in faith and sorrow over the suffering witnessed worldwide. The holy month, they say, offers a rare opportunity for spiritual renewal and self-improvement.

Imam Mehidin Bešlić of Sarajevo’s Hrasno community emphasized the broader spiritual message of the holy month, calling on believers to pray for peace and stability.

“I pray, and I invite all believers to ask God to help us complete this Ramadan and to improve conditions in our city, our country, and the entire world,” he said. “God created us to establish order, justice, and responsibility.”

Reisul-ulema Husein Kavazovic, the head of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, urged Muslims to remember those suffering around the world.

“To be devoted to God in a world collapsing into violence and immorality is a special privilege,” Kavazovic said. “Let our prayers include those who suffer, and let our charity reach the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable.”

Ramadan is observed through fasting, prayer, charity, and acts of compassion.
