Darko Mladic, the son of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic, whose life sentence was upheld by The Hague-based UN court last week, has announced his father's defense team will submit for the review of the final judgment.

Speaking to Serbian media, Darko Mladic said that the dissenting opinion of judge Prisca Matimba Nyambe will be very useful for this procedure.

He told TV Prva that his father's team will also ask that he is allowed medical treatment, as his health is such that serving the sentence in the UK or Estonia would be a “death sentence” for him.

“We will try to send a team of medical experts to him again. I have noticed that the visits are regular in the Dutch prison where the UN prison is located. At this moment, only the UN holds some restrictions and it's been clear since the beginning that they misused the corona (pandemic) to cut general Mladic off from his doctors and lawyers for consultations,” he said.

The UN tribunal for war crimes in former Yugoslavia confirmed last week the first-instance ruling for Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb wartime military leader, sentencing him to life in prison for the Srebrenica genocide and other war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Out of five judges in the panel, judge Prisca Matimba Nyambe was the only one to express a dissenting opinion on all indictment counts that Mladic was sentenced for.
