The Association of the Congress of Bosniak Intellectuals (VKBI) has called on the Office of the High Representative (OHR) to publicly disclose the invitation extended to the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to testify in the Kovacevic case. This request follows reports that Schmidt will appear in Strasbourg as a "friend of the Court" after the Council of Ministers of BiH appealed the ruling in the "Slaven Kovacevic vs. BiH" case.
“If the OHR fails to disclose this information, it will face significant issues and further strain trust and cooperation among political actors in BiH, leading to misunderstandings and distrust with potentially serious consequences,” VKBI stated.
The Association also noted that recent reports suggest Schmidt will testify before the ECHR in the Kovacevic case in his capacity as a “friend of the Court.”
“OHR’s statement on this matter reminded the public that this is not unprecedented, as former High Representatives have participated in previous cases before the ECHR. However, what has caused concern is the unofficial information that Schmidt, through a London-based law firm, voluntarily sought to participate in this case. This was neither confirmed nor denied in the OHR's statement,” VKBI said.
They also mentioned that Croatia attempted to intervene in the case but was rejected by the Court, which was the correct decision. Croatia tried to present itself as a guarantor of the Dayton Peace Agreement, a false representation.
VKBI emphasized that the OHR has a duty to provide clear information to the public in Bosnia and Herzegovina about the specifics of this case.
