According to opposition representatives in Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity, by agreeing to meet with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this week, the Serb member of BiH’s tripartite Presidency, Milorad Dodik, broke an agreement between RS political parties to boycott state institutions.

Dodik, who is also the leader of the ruling party in the RS, announced that he would participate in the meeting between Erdogan and members of Bosnia’s Presidency on Friday.

The move comes despite the decision of political leadership in the Serb-majority entity to withdraw from state-level institutions which came after the former High Representative in BiH, Valentin Inzko, imposed a law banning genocide denial and glorification of war criminals in the country.

“I will show up in the meeting. Erdogan is a great leader of a great state,” Dodik told reporters during a press conference on Tuesday.

According to RS opposition representatives, this means that Dodik is ending the boycott.

Jelena Trivic, a representative of the Party of Democratic Progress (PDP) in the RS National Assembly, told N1 that Dodik never asked PDP leader Borislav Borenovic or Serb Democratic Party (SDS) leader, Mirko Sarovic, for their opinion regarding the meeting, but only informed them of his decision.

She said Dodik only spoke to them in order to create a justification for his move.

“He is looking for an alibi among the opposition,” she argued.

Trivic said that any meeting of such kind is a good thing, but that, on the other hand, “there are RS National Assembly conclusions that have been adopted and should be adhered to.”

“They are precise and should not be interpreted. They state that participation in the work of ‘joint institutions’ should only happen in order to prevent the adoption of decisions harmful for Republika Srpska. Dodik wants to appear at the meeting,” she said.

“He did violate the conclusions. He can try to find 1,000 excuses,” she stressed.

Another RS opposition lawmaker, Nebojsa Vukanovic, told N1 that “the opposition should not provide an alibi for Dodik,” arguing that the Bosnian Serb Presidency member “betrayed the people, the RS National Assembly and all party leaders” once again.

“Dodik will very soon start making decisions in the Presidency of BiH in order to distribute these 600 million from the IMF. Dodik is trying to find an alibi by allegedly seeking the consent of the opposition for a meeting with Erdogan. The decisions are clear,” he said.

He argued that Dodik is under pressure from Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, as well as the West, and that it is only a matter of time before he resumes his work at the BiH state level “and when his narrative about the great Serb who defies the international community” will come to an end.
