Samir Avdic elected new mayor of Sarajevo

Samir Avdic has been elected as the new mayor of Sarajevo. The City Council voted in his favor with 16 votes supporting, four opposing, and seven abstaining. Mirela Dzehverovic was appointed Deputy Mayor with 16 votes in favour, nine against, and two abstentions, while Predrag Puharic was also elected Deputy Mayor with 17 votes in favour, six against, and four abstentions.

Earlier in the session, the City Council also elected its new leadership. Alen Girt was chosen as the Chairman of the Sarajevo City Council, with Svjetlana Sosic and Emir Bico (NIP) named as his deputies.

Samir Avdic was born on March 21, 1967, in Sarajevo, where he completed his primary, secondary, and higher education. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in "Sports Management" from the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education at the University of Sarajevo.

Avdic has had a distinguished basketball career, having progressed through all stages at the Basketball Club Bosna before moving on to play for several European clubs, including Unicaja Malaga in Spain, and PTT Ankara, Tofas Bursa, and Tuborg Izmir in Turkey.

His professional experience includes managerial positions in sports, and he is also known for his humanitarian work as one of the founders of the organisation "Dobro.ba". He previously served as the sports director of the national basketball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From January 2021 to March 2023, Avdic held the position of Minister of Culture and Sports in the Government of Sarajevo Canton. He has received multiple honours for his contributions to society, including the title of Merited Sportsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Turkish, Samir Avdic is married and a father of two.
