“In his own fashion, then and in the years to come, he shared the emotions with Sarajevans with the full understanding of the truth and awareness about the tragedy of our city and the country, finding the way to transform that emotion into his songs. He was the person of peace, justice compassion, the human soul poet, the musician who marked half a century of joyous and sad days of numerous generations who unconditionally loved and respected him,” said the note, paying the last respect to the late musician.

It was also stressed that Djordje Balasevic has left this world but that his songs and ability to share emotions with his audience will remain forever.

“Rest in peace, our poet and friend,” said the note.

Balasevic died on Friday from pneumonia caused by coronavirus, according to Serbian media.

Soon after the news of his death, numerous citizens gathered on Sarajevo's central square where they lit candles and paid tribute to one of the most famous musicians in ex-Yugoslavia.
